Ohio was the 17th state to join the Union in 1812. Congress never officially acted on the admission of Ohio, an oversight realized in 1953, so Ohio was officially admitted to the Union retroactively to March 1, 1803. Ohio is an Iroquois word meaning "good river." The name refers to the Ohio River that forms the state's southern border. Columbus is the capital. Currently, Ohio has a population of 11.5 million residents.

Ohio's economy consists of strong manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. Ohio is the site of the invention of the airplane, resulting from the experiments of the Wright brothers in Dayton at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. It was on this base where many of the early aerodynamic experiments of the Wright brothers were performed.
